An ultimate guide to-sin sod

From ancient times, dowry is given to the groom’s family by the bride’s family to ensure her happy and blessed life. But unlike other regions of the world, Thailand altogether follows a different custom where at the very first step; the boy’s family has to discuss the things with the girl’s parents about sin-sod and tong-mun.  Tong-mun is basically an engagement ceremony where rings are exchanged and sin-sod is a custom where gifts are exchanged between the boy and girl. The girl family gets a sum of money by the groom’s family to display the financial stability of the groom.

Well…splitting the term sin-sod, sin implicates riches and things of value including (gold, cattle or other asset) and sod implicates the act of storing the goods. Conventionally, many parents preferred giving cattle including goats, cows, and buffalo depending upon their status but presently, scenario is bit different and majority of parents want to get the sin sod amount deposited in bank account on behalf of their daughter.  The amount of sin sod is not really fixed and it varies by depending upon the social status, name, and reputation in the society.

Once all the ceremonies and rituals are followed by the bride-groom, they are knotted in the eternal precious relationship and it is termed as Koo-Mun according to the Thailand’s custom and tradition. Once koo-mun is done, delicious meal is served to all the guests. The entire ambiance gets immersed in love which is really a pleasure to experience. Once all these things are done, “bai sri soo kwan” ceremony is performed where the newly wed thai women is ornamented by all the other ladies of the village. All the rustic things like banana leaves, rice flowers and string are used to prepare the ornament for the girl. In the midst of the ceremony, soo- kwan, is given to the bride. On the whole, the entire atmosphere is wrapped up by giving bride-groom hands together and they have to exchange the vows of life that both of them will live eternally and will be the best companion in every phase of life. All the relatives and loved ones celebrate the ceremony by dancing culturally, known as ram vong.

On the whole, there is a glimpse of eternal love, peace, tranquility in each and every marriage ceremony celebrated by the Thai’s. There are many westerners also who are turning up to marry the beautiful thai girls  so, if you also want to experience the rich nad beautiful Thai culture, just pack up your bags and go for it.
